How to Have Joyful Moments

Time is a gift that we can use to make our life more joyful. It is one of the best resources equally given to all.

I believe time was created first even before space and matter existed. The first verse of the Bible tells us, “In the beginning God..” Time is God’s creation. And like all creation, the enemy can corrupt our time and make us go about our days without joy.

How do we turn our ordinary, (sometimes boring and/or tiring) moments into instruments of praise and reasons to rejoice?

Here are the top things I do to make my time more joyful:

1. Sing!

While cleaning, washing, cooking (sorry, I don’t believe in pamahiin) giving my baby a bath, ironing, folding clothes..and the list goes on..I sing! I don’t have that magical voice but I sing what the Spirit leads me to sing. Most of the time the song does not have to come out of my mouth. I can always sing in my mind and in my heart. Singing lightens my burdens and reduces stress, and puts a smile on my face.

Ephesians: 5. 19. Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 

2. Listen to music

I love listening to soul-uplifting, mind-soothing, God-honoring music. It is scientifically proven that listening to this kind of music increases brain connections and metabolism. That means it can help me become smarter and healthier. Music can also calm my nerves and make me more relaxed and focused – great reasons to rejoice!

3. Think of God’s promises and goodness

God gives time for me to know Him and enjoy Him. It is ungrateful for me to use it to fret, to complain, to worry, to compare, to covet, to sin.

Instead, I should use it to remember God’s Word and His goodness in my life. When Satan’s “army of losers” throw their fiery darts of negative, painful, accusing thoughts in my mind, I would utter a prayer for strength and wisdom to divert my mind to God’s promises. It’s not always easy, that’s why it’s called “mental battle”. The joyful thing about it is that when you replace ungodly thoughts with Scriptures, victory is sure.

Next time I’m reminded of my failures, I would turn to 1 John 1:9

 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 

When worry flows in, I’d say to myself:

1 Peter: 5. 7. Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 

4. Say something encouraging to others

It’s easier said than done. How would you share something encouraging to others when you yourself is struggling for motivation?

I’ve discovered a secret: I don’t have to feel it! If I really want to turn an annoying moment into a joyous one, I can say a positive statement and then my feelings would follow. (Remember: Don’t follow your heart, but lead it.) Again, to do this, I would have to ask for grace.

5. Smile and say, “God loves me, it’s going to be ok.

I can’t control everything in my life. For me to appreciate the half-filled cup is better than fretting on the half-emptiness. It has been my practice to smile and say “God loves me, it’s going to be ok” every time I wake up.

God can take care of me and my needs and my concerns better than me. So, why worry? I would rather enjoy the moments He created for me and glean the graces He leaves along the way.

Life is a gift and God has given rich blessings attached to it. Time is one of the blessings I am always grateful with. Praying for more joyful moments to experience and to share with others!
