In 2009, NASA spent $18 billion for space exploration projects1. Other countries trail behind with amounts ranging from hundred million to billions of dollars. The novels and films about the future world and finding or building another better world gross billions2. Why?
It is because it is an intriguing idea: to conquer human weaknesses and frailties – just to survive. But as humans, are we merely existing to survive? Is there more to this journey than merely reaching the finish line?
It is a joyful thought to accept that the better world we need is not really a need.
We all want to have better situations in life, better security, better relationships, better achievements, better this, better that… and most of the times, when the “better” arrives, we take it for granted because now we wish for the “best”. We, humans, are the hardest to please among God’s creation. We are never satisfied. To the point that even God’s best – this planet that He created for us – is not enough, and we aim for something better.
We really don’t know what we need. We spend a lot of time, effort, and money for things that won’t last, and we neglect those things that will last for eternity. How can we trust such faulty priorities?
When God created everything – this planet, the whole universe, and all matters and energies within it, His comment was not only “Good”, but:
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good” Genesis 1:31
When the Creator Himself is saying, it is “Very Good!”, it is indeed Very Good!
It is also a joyful thought to realize that the better world we need is not a place… but a Person.
More than longing for a better planet, there is another longing within us that needs to be satisfied – the longing for Someone. We may gain another planet, or have all the riches this universe can offer, but that longing will still make us miserable individuals if it is not fulfilled.
Riches won’t satisfy, as even some of the richest persons in the world ended their own lives3. Beauty, fame, success, even human relationships… all these are unable to satisfy the deepest human longing for a relationship with Someone.
This Someone is higher than us, but He made Himself the lowest among human beings to save us – to save us from the destruction all humans are bound to experience.
So, there is indeed a destruction that’s waiting to happen? Yes, but the way to avoid it is not hopping into another planet. For even going into that extreme won’t help. The only way to free ourselves (not survive!) from our ultimate destruction is to be in a relationship with Him.
He has already taken His move. He set aside His glory, just to experience what it is to be a lowly human and He even experienced the worst a man can experience while on this planet – to be betrayed by those persons whom He has helped and loved, and to be killed by them.
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:5-8
His name is Jesus, and He is the Only Person we need. He is all we need. He is the God of the Universe who took on human form to save us, by conquering death and hell for us. He was crucified, buried, and after three days and three nights, rose again from the grave, the firstborn of the resurrection. He already conquered man’s greatest fear – death, and He already promised victory over man’s greatest destruction – hell.
“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:55-57
Have we trusted Him already? Have we had the faith to believe that what He did on this earth, on the cross, on the grave, was for us? He did it all for us. He longs to build a relationship with us so He can show us more of His goodness and glory, and we’ll discover more that we don’t need a better place, we only need the best Person.
It is even a more joyful thought to look forward to that better world beyond this life.
Better than the best “future” worlds out there, is a promised Paradise. Heaven is the place we are longing for.
It is far better than what human mind can imagine, more beautiful than any filmmaker can portray, more satisfying than any place in this universe. It is not part of this known universe. It is a special place beyond human dimension and comprehension.
Again, the only reason it is heaven is because of the One Who saved us for us to get there.
Are you ready, and 100% sure that’s the place where you will be spending eternity?
